I am asked all of the time, Why are Custom Invitations More Expensive?  I have been asked this question so much lately by inquiring brides, and fellow industry vendors, I decided to update a blog I wrote in 2010 on the topic!  My hope is to answer any questions out there, as well share with you why we should value hard work and talent!

READY-MADE VS CUSTOM: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Ready Made invitations are printed in the thousands as Templates. The Main design is printed in BULK in the thousands, stored and then distributed around the country to different invitation vendors, who put them in a book. And then brides go in, search through the books and choose the invitation they like. When that order is placed, a smaller less expensive printer, usually digital or laser, is used to print your name and personal information on the DESIGN TEMPLATE. So that the cost is less, they aren't having to set up and order supplies everytime an order comes in. They did this initially in the beginning and printed in BULK.

Custom Designed Invitations are more expensive because you are printing something unique and different in smaller numbers. They usually also include embellishments such as ribbon, crystals, brooches, etc. Which adds hand labor to the process. The above invitations have Lace Accents, ribbon, crystals, etc and no machine can do accents such as these. I always try and educate my brides that it makes more sense to purchase a package if you want something custom. Then we can make use of all the supply minimums we've had to order. (Keep reading for further explanation of minimums and labor)

Why should I choose custom instead of trying to DIY them?  I get asked this question all time, not just by brides but by many industry vendors as well. My answer is simple, and I say this in the nicest way possible: YOU HAVE NO EXPERIENCE AND WON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING :) Because you don't do this on a daily basis, or have multiple projects like this under your belt, the quality of your final product will suffer. Our team has over 8 years of event industry experience, and over 20 years of design and printing experience. We have developed systems and methods over the years to produce our designs and creations — giving you an amazing quality.

Lot's of Brides, vendors and even friends have told me, they thought they would "Save Money" by doing their own stationery projects for their wedding. In the end, they ended up spending MORE MONEY AND TIME because they have never done this before, and end up with a lot of waste, mistakes and overspending on supplies. What does this mean? Here's an example, you and your bridesmaids gather around a table, for gossip and DIY. Well unfortunately, this means you will end up with 100 pieces, that all look different. Some of them may even have glue mistakes, crooked embellishments, and lopsided bows.

When you seek out a professional you are ensuring your stationery will be beautiful and of high production value. Because we have so much experience we have developed systems and procedures over the years to ensure that when we have to glue a total of 4,000 crystals — the very first crystal glued has the same look and placement as the very last crystal we glue. We also have quality control procedures in place to ensure that every guest receives the very best of our creations! As professionals completing multiple weddings a year, my staff and I have tested and used many different products over the years (i.e. glue, paper, ink, etc). Taking Glue as an example: Not all glue is created equally! :)  We know what glue is best and won't bleed through to the other side of the paper, or what glue is the strongest or is easiest to clean up if a mistake as made.

Another reason to choose a trusted professional is relationships. Over the years relationships are built with the various vendors we work with. Because of this, you will probably get better pricing on supplies going through a professional than purchasing them yourself. For example, If there is more than one wedding on the books using Linen Paper, then paper for both wedding projects can be ordered at the same time - this sometimes can help save cost. Or if you have more than one wedding using the same paper, you might be able to print them together on a larger sheet- therefore saving money on set up fees. Your stationer can negotiate with the paper and printing vendor and get a better pricing than you could as an a la carte customer.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against DIY, but if you are looking for high quality stationery and reception creations that will WOW your guests, chances are you won't get that when you try to do it yourself. I know Pinterest and Etsy make it seem so easy, but take it from a professional you get what you pay for — creating custom designs that WOW takes talent, experience and a practiced steady hand.

ONE EXAMPLE OF LABOR — ESCORT CARD DISPLAY:
PROJECT TIME FROM CONCEPT TO COMPLETION, 20 HOURS

(images in the above gallery courtesy of Root Photorgraphy and Amy Morelli)

TO START THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS OF THIS ESCORT CARD DISPLAY, THE FRAME NEEDED TO BE
ORDERED AND PAINTED. STEP TWO: RESEARCH AND PROCUREMENT OF THE BASE, AS WELL AS MOSS APPLICATION TO A CARDBOARD INSERT WAS COMPLETED. GUEST NAMES WERE DESIGNED AND ALPHABETIZED IN AN OMBRE DESIGN. ESCORT CARDS WERE THEN PRINTED AND DIE CUT INTO CIRCLES. IN THE FINAL STAGE, WE USED STRAIGHT PINS TO AFFIX THE CARDS TO THE MOSS, MEASURING ALONG THE WAY TO ENSURE PROPER SPACING AND PLACEMENT.  AS YOU CAN SEE THE END RESULT WAS WELL
WORTH THE TIME INVOLVED, BONUS: IT WAS A BIG HIT WITH THE GUESTS AT THE EVENT.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN CHOOSING CUSTOM

Why choose a Custom Invitation over a Ready Made Invitation?  I have found that the brides who seek me out for Custom Stationery do it because they want to add a personal and unique, one of a kind flare to their wedding. I love getting to know my clients and developing stationery for their event. There is nothing more rewarding than creating something that reflects who they are as a couple, as well as setting the tone and design for the overall feeling of their event.

Is a Custom Invitation for You? Do you want to set the tone for your wedding from the moment your guest receive their first communication from you? Do you want something unique and one of a kind that your guests have never seen before? Do you want your guests to feel your personal touch and love for them throughout the process of your event, from Save the Date, to Thank You Cards?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, then a Custom Designed Invitation is for you.

What will a Custom Invitation Cost?  Is a custom designed stationery package right for my budget?  The standard rule is to spend 4% of your wedding budget on stationery. With custom, the percentage is anywhere from 7 to 10% of your entire wedding budget. This formula will help you figure out if Custom Designed Invitation is right for you. Custom Designed Invitations usually start around $2,500 for approximately 100 invitations, and can go all the way to $15,000 for a full wedding package. Pricing is really dependent on embellishments and types of materials used.  An invitation with no hand work will be more modestly priced than an invitation that has silk fabric, a crystal brooch, etc.

Why is it more expensive?  You ask.  This question really has no short answer.  Printing in general is an expensive process unless you are printing in bulk, which is in quantities of 1,000 or more. The more you print the smaller the cost PER PIECE is. When you are only printing 100 of something- you have to pay the same cost to set up that printing press- whether you print 1 or 10,000.  Not to mention there are order minimums on supplies such as paper, crystals, ribbon, envelopes, etc.  Even if you need only 50 invitations you still have to buy supplies in the MINIMUMS they come in, and you still have to pay for the printing press set up.  For example you may only need 50 sheets of paper, but the fancy paper you like only sells it in reams of 250 sheets. This is the same for ribbon, fabric, crystals, wood and most other custom supplies and materials.

As I mentioned earlier, The cost per goes down when you are printing in large numbers like 1,000 or more. But most weddings don't have a guest list that large. So you are having to divide the cost of set up, supplies and labor over your small number, making the price point per MUCH higher. And each design is set up on it's own. So if you have a menu and an invitation you are paying for set up of both of those because the artwork and printing plates are different.

Another thing that contributes to cost is labor, if you want ribbon, silk fabric, crystals, etc that can really raise the price, as all of these things are hand work. Depending on the complexity of hand work hours can really increase when you are adding embellishment to hundreds of stationery pieces. And if you are wanting some real WOW factor, like the above or below escort card display or the 3 Dimensional table numbers and place cards in the header image — this required us to be onsite the day of your wedding to stage and set up your stationery package, which again can increase labor cost.

We always recommend to our couples that we do a full stationery package instead of just invitations. This way we can utilize all the supplies we need to order (remember the paper minimums we discussed earlier). And if after reading this you've determined you don't have the budget for Custom, then please visit our Ready-Made, Limited Edition Line Paper Couture Stationery.

A CASE STUDY — FULL CUSTOM WEDDING EVENT PROJECT
SCOPE OF PROJECT : 6 MONTHS FROM START TO FINISH

(images in the above gallery courtesy of Liga Photography)

FOR THIS BRIDE, WE WERE ABLE TO UTILIZE ALL THE PAPER AND SUPPLY MINIMUMS, BY USING THEM ACROSS MULTIPLE WEDDING APPLICATIONS. AS YOU CAN SEE BY THE TOP TWO PHOTOS, WE WERE ABLE TO CREATE SIMILAR YET DIFFERENT INVITATION SUITES — ONE FOR HER BRIDAL SHOWER AND THE OTHER FOR HER WEDDING INVITATION & RECEPTION SUITE. WHILE GIVING EACH PIECE IT'S OWN UNIQUE FEEL, WE WERE ABLE TO CREATE A COHESIVE BRAND DEISGN TO CARRY OUT THROUGH ALL OF HER WEDDING EVENTS.

WITH LACE, PEARL AND RIBBON ACCENTS THIS CREATION INVOVLED EXTENSIVE HAND WORK AND LABOR. FROM THE GLASS VASES FILLED WITH PEARLS AND IRIDESCENT WOODEN TABLE NUMBERS TO THE ESCORT CANDLE DISPLAY DIRECTING THE GUEST TO THEIR TABLE.  (see me pictured above onsite alphabetizing and tying ribbons for over 300 candles for the guests) A CUSTOM COLORING BOOK WITH ILLUSTRATIONS TELLING THE COUPLES LOVE STORY WAS ALSO CREATED FOR THE CHILDREN ATTENDING THE EVENT.

As you can see by the case study above, the stationery visual is pretty impactful. It took about 6 months of work prior to the wedding to prepare and create all pieces. This was a wedding for 300, remember number of guests will help determine the time needed and pricing of your project. 100 invitations with no embellishment will take less time and supplies than 300 invitations with embellishment on each piece.

I hope you have enjoyed this post, and increased your understanding of custom stationery. I you have any other questions you want answered- Comment and I will answer the best I can.

If you live in Florida or have been watching the news, you know that Florida made Same Sex Marriage legal on January 6th, 2015! YAY FLORIDA!  I am proud to say I have always been a supporter of #Equality!  Working in the Event Industry I am connected with vendors and couples from all walks of life, and I'm here to tell you PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE. In my opinion, the thing that separates us in society is how we treat each other — not who we are or who we love. It's whether or not we are there for each other as humans. This is what builds character. This is what makes us open to love and new life experiences.

This past November I was asked to participate and sponsor ONE LOVE: a wedding for everyone, presented by Kathy Thomas of Kathy Thomas Photography.  Of course, I jumped at the chance! It was a great opportunity to work with some amazing vendors and to connect with vendors I had yet had the pleasure of working with — all while showing my support for the LGBTQ community.

A two-day experience at the Ritz Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, the workshop featured Bernadette Smith of the Gay Wedding Institute, as well as a styled shoot and education on same sex weddings, SEO and marketing language. The brain child of  Kathy Thomas, ONE LOVE: a wedding for everyone was a huge success, photography from the workshop will be used in the marketing materials of the Ritz Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, and the workshop itself got a mention on the Channel 6 News! (watch here)

I loved working on this project! It was great working with Kathy creating the Branding and Stationery for take away's and the styled location shoots! She is a formidable force in the event industry and her vision oozed sophistication!

"My goal is to help educate my community by fostering an environment that continues education, growth and support, so we can be experts in the wedding community. I am a believer in equality — I created my company in support of love and marriage and couldn't be happier that Florida has legalized it for all couples."   — KATHY THOMAS

Job well done! I know she poured her heart and soul into this workshop, and it was evident by the amazing experience she created! Jealous? :)  Experience it yourself with this great trailer by Key Moment Films.

Let's not forget Lisa Stoner of E-Events, she designed the styled shoots at the Ritz Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. A beautiful modern classic ballroom set, (complete with the ladies from Our DJ Rocks!) and an elegant outdoor farm experience at Whisper Creek Farm. Thank you Lisa, for always creating amazing environments to showcase my stationery! (I kid, I kid...it's not just about the stationery!) Tipping my hat to Raining Roses  and the Chalk Shop as well for creating her amazing vision!

Correspondence with Flair

AmyComment

Recently we addressed the importance of keeping the handwritten thank you note alive.  As we worked on embellishing Invitations, Holiday Cards, and Thank You’s throughout this busy season a thought evoked… writing can be mundane BUT embellishing is always an inspiration for excitement, for both the giver and receiver.

So the next time you sit down to write a letter or feel uninspired consider the following ways you can spice it up… add a touch of character… and express your personal style!  You might find that looking forward to the details may awaken the purpose of your correspondence and even influence a theme.

Embossing Press
In creating various stationery projects for our coveted client Florida Hospital, we were inspired to design this embossing press featuring the Florida Hospital logo.  The result was a piece of class!  We loved the touch so much that we designed a piece for ourselves here at The 2u Collection and we just couldn’t stop pressing our logo onto all types of surfaces once we received it!! An adornment like this can be customized with a logo or graphic to fit most any need! - Check out theStampMaker.com

Envelope Enhancements & Pristine Packaging
Envelope liners, wax seals, color corrugated shipping boxes and custom designed labels add a unique elegance to any mailing!

Courtesy of TheWeddingPhile.Blogspot.com

Gorgeous envelope liners can be found for almost any size at Paper-Source.com - From solid colors to fine prints, liners add that finishing touch... much like a fabulous lining on a tailored jacket or cuff!

Something as simple as changing the color standard on packaging can really act to catch the eye.  Give the brown box a lift and go for a bold color, or take it a step further and choose unique shapes and sizes.  Take a browse around USBox.com for a plethora of packaging!!

The timeless wax seal needs little explanation...  It's clean, elegant and speaks volumes as you seal each envelope with care and sincerity.  At Nostalgic Impressions they create polished & personalized wax seals that make us swoon!

A Pop of Color... A Taste of Texture
Colored envelopes and textured papers will change the entire feel of a correspondence piece while adding impact to that stack of junk mail! Even here at The 2u Collection our eyes spark and open wide when we catch a rouge within the pile... and of course, it's the first we chose to open and admire!!

Have you ever experienced that moment when writing or creating a thoughtful piece, where you just couldn't wait for the recipient to open?! Oh the anticipation!!! Well, there are times when the excitement is all too much and you boldly take an unconventional approach, much like that featured above. This client was so full of joy in announcing their new edition, that they simply had us print a lovely portrait right on the envelope -- Secrets Out!!

As we sift through the mail texture stands out to the touch!!  The columned paper featured above is sure to impress.  Play with different paper types and treatments to evoke a variety of feelings.  Neenah Paper is one of our favorite paper pros but check out Paper Mojo as well for decadent handmade papers!

Stuck & Stamped
Both of these are cute and quirky ways to add a bit of personal whimsy & cultural flare! -- You can layout, design a nice label & stamp or print right on the envelope.

Courtesy of IntimateWeddings.com

We just love this! Try buying stamps in small denominations and then placing them creatively on the piece to create a fun and traveled feel. Pick up stamps as you explore the world or hometown. Check out vintage and antique shops... alot of the time they'll have these treasures tossed amongst old photos and such!

A custom ink stamp like the one we created above not only acts to adorn a mailing piece, but it can also be held as a keepsake and used time and time again on a variety of creative indulgences.  - OrlandoRubberStamps.com produced our design flawlessly!

Baby Dixon Sits Under a Traditional Family Tree with a Touch of Whimsy!

AmyComment
He has arrived!! Lucas Thomas Dixon joins the Dixon Family and our wheels spun *literally* with inspiration!

If you are a follower of us then you are familiar with the Dixons'! Not only are they staples in my personal life, as they are a couple of my closest friends, they have been loyal clients to me for years. In 2009, we designed their wedding suite of stationery, from save the dates to invites! In 2011, we were happy to art direct and plan Robyn's baby shower. (click the links to view past entries) And now we are so happy we created Announcements for the newest addition into the family, Lucas.  And I must tell you he is the cutest little bundle, with a giant personality to match!

Robyn and Andrew are avid bicyclers. It's a lifestyle that they both enjoy, so of course little Lucas will grow up on a set of wheels of his own! With that in mind, we created this fun baby announcement design.

We decided to take a traditional concept and rework it into a unique and stand-out piece with this announcement. Playing off the classic idea of a Family Tree and the Bicycling theme we added some flare and thus emerged a quite fanciful tribute to the new birth of Baby Dixon.

Several elements came together to make this piece POP! Most think... "It's A Boy" = Baby Blue Head to Toe... Which to Us = MUNDANE! The solution, enhance that baby blue into bold Metallic Egyptian Blues, Rich Turquoises and Spirited Cyans. We went on a little further pairing our redefined blue palette with Lush Greens and a hint of Cream.

A few finishing touches including Scalloped Edging & Tag along with our favored final detail, a Retro Silver Bicycle Charm came together to add just the right sense of playful whimsy to the arrival and growth of a much anticipated young boy. No more was needed than priceless photos and a simple envelope... soon those closest would know of Lucas Thomas Dixon as he began his ride through this wonderland that is life!

A Winter Wedding with A Festive Flare!

AmyComment

"OMG Amy!!! It arrived today and Tim and I both just love, love, LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's gorgeous!!! It's laying on the bed right now so we can look at it AGAIN before we go to bed!!! We have a nightly ritual of trying on our rings before we go to bed at night - and now we will add opening and looking at the invitation to it!

You are the BEST, Amy!! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!   "

~ Jennifer--BRIDE ~

Let me tell you, we were just as enthusiastic during the design and production process of this invitation!
It's Prime Time here in the World of Weddings and what a way to start off the season!
The bride-- a doll who entrusted us with full creative freedom, The result--a glamorously adorned invitation package with divine details and refined extravagance!

Being a winter wedding, we wanted to create a design that fit the theme of the holiday without becoming.... well.... cheesy. So instead of cliche holiday graphics and icons we focused on incorporating timeless elements into the details of this piece. Details became the main inspiration with Chevron Prints, Letterpress Accents, Metallics, and a Bold Color Palate & Play On Words that would exude a festive flare with sophistication.

The Felt Inlaid Invitation was framed with a Letterpress Border and finished onto a Silver Metallic Chevron Print backing. We carried these design elements into the response card adding Letterpress Chevron accents to be enclosed in a Silver Metallic envelope with Red Print detail. The combination of Letterpress and Screen Printing added clean dimension that would carry the eye.

************************************************************************************************************

Pulling it all together was an elegant Die Cut Invitation Jacket in Metallic Red for added splendor! Pushing further into the realm of luxury we went on to adorn the enclosure with a perfectly wrapped Red Satin Bow and Letterpressed Bellyband all of which would be held in a Quartz Metallic envelope to finish. I won't lie, this is one of my faves this season, it's classy and elegant with a hint of holiday flare!

If I had to choose what it is that I love most about this piece I would have to say it's BALANCE. It can be challenging to create themed pieces without falling into stereotypical expectations. I am thrilled that this piece seems to have embraced the opulence of the holidays without being over-the-top or predictable.

"I'm getting amazing feedback on the invites!! Everyone LOVES them! One of my friends flipped out over them today - said they were beautiful and that he and his wife just LOVED theirs!!   Woohoo!!! SOOOO exciting!! The invitations really did turn out beautifully, Amy! Thank you!!  So far, everyone thinks their gorgeous! Those who haven't gotten them yet are completely jealous of the ones who have! Lol!"

~ Jennifer--BRIDE ~

We are touched that the bride took the time to express her excitement and that recipients shared in out sentiments!

Playground Magazine - The Dying Thank-You Note

AmyComment

The 2u Collection just loves Playground Magazine! As fellow local entrepreneurs and independent business owners, we would like to show this fabulously fresh publication a little support and appreciation. Flipping through the pages of their latest issue, we ran across an article that hit close to home as Playground Magazine featured the importance of the Hand-Written Thank-You Note. Our stationary division more than agrees that this is a dwindling art that must NOT be lost. Sure, a card and a signature will cover the obligation, but there is something to be said about the increased gratitude that is exuded with a personalized touch.

CHECK OUT THE FALL ISSUE OF PLAYGROUND MAGAZINE to see their take & get some inspiration on expressing your own thanks!

11/11/11

As many of your know, 11/11/11 was the most popular wedding date on the planet! I want to share with you my 11/11/11 couple.  I love them both, they were a joy to work with and as you can see the result below was stunning.  This couple came to me 2 months before their wedding, which makes it all the more special. I feel very flattered when a bride a groom love my work so much that they decide to switch gears so close to their wedding and get me in on the stationery design. Because we didn't meet until well after their invitations had gone out, we created only the ceremony programs and placecards.

It's all in the Details!

Amy3 Comments
(ALL STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIGA PHOTOGRAPHY)

I often have brides ask me how do I create a full wedding package with each piece unique, yet they all tie together.  Well, I'm going to share with you a little secret. It's all about the details. And this doesn't just go for your stationery, incorporating similar details throughout your weddings, in the flowers, in the stationery, in the cake, and in the dress. (Of course I know there is more to a wedding then these things, I'm just using these things as examples)

As we all know, every bride wants to have an AMAZING event that could grace the pages of a magazine. My first suggestion would be to get a planner.  There are several reasons for this. Planners have experience with tons of different vendors with different styles. And they can help you put together a team of creatives with styles that will compliment each other and give you the dream you are imagining. Plus, any good planner will help you design your wedding from the furniture at the reception to the church or venue you get married in. As well as take the stress, that comes with getting married, off of you so you can truly relax and enjoy every minute of your engagement and wedding experience.

Okay, now that I have gotten that out. It's time to discuss the details, since my expertise is everything paper and stationery, I will use one of my favorite stationery designs to illustrate what I'm trying to say.

The bride loved the feather element we incorporated in the wedding invitation (see wooden box above) but we didn't want feathers to overpower the reception or the stationery, so they were incorporated into the cake and the coloring book above we illustrated for the children at the wedding.

PS. another nice PERSONAL touch was the illustration of the coloring book was the love story
of the bride and groom. Personal Touches can really help the overall tone of your wedding and make the stationery of your event really move your guests.

You can easily create an amazing wedding experience, you just need to keep in mind you need to sprinkle similar design elements throughout. For example As you can see in the Main image at the top, the bride really liked the design elements of pearls, lace and feathers. Now, something to keep in mind is A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY.  Mistakes a lot of brides make is they take their favorite design element and then WAAAAAAYYYYY overdue it..

My advice is you pick at least 2, NO MORE Than 3 design elements and then sprinkle them throughout your wedding or your wedding stationery.  If your instinct tells you you're using something too much. Than you probably are and should dial it back.  My suggestion would be to decide what the feeling is you want to convey at your wedding, and focus on that feeling more than the parts and pieces of your wedding. For example, the images I'm using, this bride wanted a romantic, elegant feeling. Focusing on this, is what helps me in every design project I take on.

The Iridescent Wooden Invitation Box inspired these table numbers, the guests only saw the wood texture in the invitation, so it was a nice detail in the reception table numbers to
remind them of how they felt when they received that invitation.
PS. we filled the glass vases with pearls, as that was detail throughout the
wedding the bride wanted to see.

As you can see, buy the above pictures, we loved the lace and pearl elements but didnt' want to go overboard with them so one pearl embleshined the passed appetizer trays, the reception menus, and the church programs, small lace borders we used just on the programs and the appetizer tray cards.

When I feel that I'm struggling with a particular element of the stationery set as a whole, I step back take a minute and go back to the feeling we are trying to create. A perfect example of this is the escort cards from this wedding stationery. I wanted to do something that went with the other stationery pieces, but didn't look exactly like them. So I thought.. ROMANCE & ELEGANCE, what I came up with is below, they were a big hit and really added to the romance of the cocktail hour.

Glass votives with lit candles and translucent vellum created these unique escort cards, and although they didn't incorporate pearls, lace or feathers, but it really added to the romantic feel,
along with matching the other stationery pieces.

DIY Wedding Stationery or NOT?? That is the question.

My studio when supplies for a wedding of 200 come in.. Boxes and supplies everywhere, need sorting, counting and to be made into the final product! It can be overwhelming and a mess if you aren't expecting it and don't know where to begin.

As a custom design Stationer, one thing I run into a lot is brides who call me 1 or 2 weeks before the mailing of their wedding invitations in a PANIC.. " CAN YOU HELP ME.. they ask?

These are brides who early on found some amazing complex stationery creation on a blog or a custom site and have decided they will DO IT THEMSELVES, How hard can it be right?

Well, because this happened a lot last year, I decided I would dedicate a blog to my thoughts on the subject. I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to DIY when it comes to your wedding stationery, however I do think most brides jump in with both feet not really knowing how to properly go about it and not really realizing the time, effort and man power involved in producing what they have decided their dream wedding invitation will be.

Alot of brides don't realize the time, effort and skill, yes SKILL ladies, that goes into producing your own wedding stationery. So they jump right in thinking they will get their dream wedding stationery for MUCH CHEAPER than that custom studio was asking. Seems like a good idea until you are right in the middle of the fray, of frantically ordering paper, trying to get the printer set up properly, printing, cutting, assembling, tying 100 ribbons, addressing and trying to make it to the post office before they close. Why is this, because it wasn't as easy or quick as it all seemed initially.

Okay, I am a little biased on the subject, however you wouldn't buy a steak at Publix and take it to Ruth Cris and ask them if they minded if you popped in the kitchen to grill it yourself would you? Or tell the doctor I can do that surgery myself, of course not.. You would trust the professionals to do what they are good at.

A few things to consider, you will spend alot of time and money, not to mention the slave labor of your family and bridal party you will need, to try and tackle this yourself. WHY you ask? Well I answer, for several reasons,

1. you don't do it on a regular basis, so you don't know any short cuts, or tricks to produce up to hundreds of the same product.

2. because you haven't developed these skill, your stationery won't come out every piece the same, which of course is what you intend. You don't want your guest at the reception with menus or escort cards with crooked printing, or glue globs you dropped while trying to adhere the crystals you so wanted to class up your stationery a bit..

3. Do it yourself printing isn't as easy as it sounds. Home printers can really be a bear when they aren't set up or sold to be high volume printing machines, not to mention if you don't order high quality paper, sometimes toner and ink can smear, chip off and just make your stationery start to look like a HOT MESS. Which means you will throw out more than you keep.

4. You don't have the vendor connections to get paper, embellishments, ribbon, etc at more affordable bulk pricing, and don't forget you are not perfect so don't just order exact amounts, there will be mistakes, and mess ups and you'll be in trouble if you need a hundred and you only ordered 100 of each supply.

5.  I could on and on.. but I think you get it..

Okay- so here is what I recommend.. There are only a few big events in your life that you will want a beautifully printed and crafted record of the day. Your wedding is one of these. So splurge, treat yourself right.. This is the only thing from your wedding (besides the husband of course) that will stand the test of time. The flowers die, the food get's eaten, the venues change, but your stationery, preserved, will last till your 50th wedding anniversary were you can pull it out and relive the moments.

Now, I understand wanting to be a part of your stationery development to have your "hands in it", so to speak, so find a custom stationer, sit with them, share your vision and they will let you be a part of the creation process, and you'll get exactly what you want with someone who cares as much as you do and will produce the high quality, product you are imagining.

Remember, a custom papery is not just a supplier of materials and embellishments but a specialist in the art of invitation, stationery design and etiquette!

Now-- go into the night.. finds a papery you LOVE, and trust in their proven abilities and you'll be wowed by the result!

Here I am at the staging of a wedding tying 250 vellum printed escort cards with ribbon around 250 votive candles, and then.. ALPHABETIZING (which is never fun) them for your guests-- imagining do this the night before your wedding on top of all of the other things on your "Hurry we have to do this before the wedding list!"
